Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, Admiral Juan José Bernal Méndez, commander of the 5th Naval Region, and Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz have initiated preventative measures in Puerto Morelos for the upcoming sargassum season. During this announcement, they revealed plans for a new state initiative: the Comprehensive Center for Sargassum Sanitation and Circular Economy.
Each year, the state of Quintana Roo faces the challenge of managing sargassum. The governor explained that this initiative is part of the state's specific actions to protect its beaches, economy, and the many families that rely on tourism. These efforts align with the New Agreement for Well-being and Development.
Last year, the Comprehensive Strategy for Sargassum Attention led to the collection of approximately 40,000 tons of sargassum. This strategy was a joint effort between SEMAR, the state government, municipal governments, and civil society. However, this year's sargassum season is expected to be even more intense, warned the governor.
To tackle this, the state is bolstering its strategy with daily beach cleanings by 368 workers and the installation of 9,200 linear meters of containment barriers. But the governor stressed that the state's efforts are not just about cleaning.
The new Comprehensive Sargassum Sanitation and Circular Economy Center aims to monitor, manage, collect, and transport sargassum efficiently. It also seeks to convert sargassum from a problem into an economic resource. This initiative will transform environmental liabilities into economic assets.
Currently, the annual cost of sargassum care accounts for 11% of the local GDP, or 2 billion dollars. This new project aims to turn sargassum into an opportunity by promoting sustainable industries, creating jobs, and reducing its environmental impact.
"Sargassum is a global challenge, but in Quintana Roo, we are acting with a future vision," the governor stated. She thanked everyone involved in this project and encouraged continued efforts towards a more sustainable future.
