Two members of the "Andrés Quintana Roo" taxi union in Cancun have recently clashed, proving that even shared union membership cannot prevent such aggression.

This is not the first time the Cancun taxi union has made headlines for the wrong reasons. A recent incident of violence between two drivers from the "Andrés Quintana Roo" union occurred on Tulum Avenue, near block 23. A video of the altercation, which quickly spread on social media, highlighted the aggression between taxi drivers and the lack of consequences for such actions.

The conflict began when one driver chose to stop at an unofficial spot outside a bar. This move was not well received by the driver of taxi number 6179, who quickly confronted him. "You know the rules," he stated before slapping the other driver. The assaulted driver responded, "You're right, brother. You hit me and we call the union." The situation escalated when the aggressor slapped him again and knocked his phone away. The attacked driver then exited his vehicle, prepared to retaliate.

Local authorities were called to the scene, but their involvement was limited to a verbal reprimand. Neither driver filed a complaint, knowing that legal involvement could result in their arrest and the impounding of their vehicles, leading to financial loss. This incident adds to the growing list of violent encounters between Cancun taxi drivers.

This is not an isolated incident. Drivers from the "Andrés Quintana Roo" union have been involved in numerous acts of violence, not only with each other but also with digital platform operators and, in extreme cases, tourists. Disputes over territory and fare disagreements have turned public transportation into a ticking time bomb, with violence seemingly the only language some taxi drivers understand.

Cancun, a leading global tourist destination, is facing a reputation crisis due to these constant altercations. Conflicts between taxi drivers not only harm those directly involved but also endanger passengers and citizens who may find themselves in the crossfire.

Despite numerous complaints and warnings, local authorities have taken a passive approach. The absence of significant penalties perpetuates a sense of impunity within the union, where internal codes appear to hold more weight than actual laws.
