A foreign couple, Paul and Christy Lin, were recently arrested in Cancún for allegedly defrauding a local hotel chain. The State Attorney General's Office of Quintana Roo reported the arrest, which was carried out by Investigative Police agents in conjunction with Interpol Mexico.
The couple's alleged fraudulent activity occurred on August 8, 2023, when the hotel chain's legal representative filed a formal complaint. The couple had left a credit card under Paul's name as a guarantee for monthly membership payments. However, between August 31 and November 4, 2022, the hotel chain was notified by the bank backing the card that 13 transactions, totaling $116,587 (equivalent to over 2 million Mexican pesos), had been cancelled by Paul. This resulted in the fraud accusation.
Christy Lin, who was also a signatory on the membership contract, was identified on social media. In a Facebook post, she shared details about the alleged fraud against the hotel chain, further supporting the accusations against her.
An arrest warrant was issued for the couple and was executed at the Cancún International Airport upon their arrival from overseas. Following their arrest, Paul and Christy Lin were handed over to the relevant authorities, who will determine their legal status in accordance with the law.
In line with international protocols, the U.S. Embassy was notified of the arrest of the American citizens.
