The Solidaridad Government has launched the Council for the Promotion of Nutrition and Fight Against Overweight, Obesity, Eating Disorders, and Prevention of Diseases such as Diabetes. The inaugural meeting took place recently, with the next two sessions scheduled for July and November.
The aim of this Council is to encourage nutritional education, devise and evaluate health policies with a focus on nutrition, and advocate for a healthy, accessible diet for all. It will also incorporate subcommittees dedicated to specific areas such as health promotion education, workplace nutrition and health, nutrition in relation to sports and physical activity, and nutrition within social assistance.
According to the director of Physical and Mental Health, Solidaridad is experiencing a high prevalence of nutrition-related diseases, primarily obesity. The challenges to be tackled include a lack of nutritional education, limited access to healthy foods, resistance to changing eating habits, and the financial sustainability of families to maintain their nutritional oversight.
Health Secretary, José Antonio Uribe, acknowledged the vital role of organizations like DIF in improving food management.
