A 17-year-old dump truck driver was arrested by the National Guard following a fatal road accident on the route from Cancún to Playa del Carmen. The accident occurred near Puerto Morelos and resulted in one death and at least ten injuries.
The driver, named J.C.Z., is originally from Tabasco and currently resides in Cancún. He was apprehended at the scene of the accident on federal highway 307, which took place around 5:30 PM. The crash involved multiple vehicles and caused significant damage to around a dozen cars.
Preliminary reports suggest that the dump truck experienced brake failure, leading to the collision. Emergency response teams from Cancún and Puerto Morelos were dispatched to the scene to assist the injured. The injured individuals were transported to nearby hospitals, while forensic teams managed the removal of the deceased.
The incident has sparked surprise and concern on social media, particularly in response to the driver's age. Many users questioned how a minor could be permitted to operate such a large vehicle. The legal status of the teenager and the company that owns the dump truck remains unclear.
Firefighters, Civil Protection, Traffic police, and tow truck operators worked together to clear the damaged vehicles and restore traffic flow on the road. Their efforts ensured further disruptions were prevented.
