The Cancun International Airport (CIA) is currently being overhauled with a bold modernization and expansion plan. This project is being spearheaded by Airports of the Southeast (Asur). The director of the CIA has confirmed that the renovations of Terminals 1 and 4 are on track, with the goal of enhancing the airport's infrastructure and catering to the increasing demand from tourists.
Terminal 1, which has been out of operation for several years, is undergoing a full-scale remodel and expansion. The work is well underway and is set to be completed by the end of 2026. This renovation will allow the terminal to reopen, which will improve the efficiency of passenger flow. Meanwhile, Terminal 4 is also being expanded. The first phase of this expansion is nearly complete and is projected to be operational by the end of 2025. Once Terminal 1 is up and running, the next phase of expansion will begin in Terminal 4 to further boost the airport's capacity.
These projects are part of Asur's five-year investment plan, which has been approved by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT). The total investment for the 2024-2028 period is projected to be 28,496 million pesos. In 2025, the planned expenditure is 4,493 million pesos, which surpasses the 2,624 million invested in 2024. At present, the CIA can accommodate up to 12,000 passengers per hour. In 2023, it recorded a flow of roughly 9,000 passengers per hour, reaching a total of 30.4 million passengers in 2024, with 20.1 million being international and 10.2 million being domestic.
For 2025, a moderate growth in air connectivity is expected, estimated to be between six and eight percent. Despite a slight decrease in passenger traffic in 2024, estimated at between 10 and 12 percent, Asur is still in talks with various airlines to broaden routes and strengthen the airport's connectivity. These investments and ongoing projects reinforce Cancun International Airport's status as one of the most significant airports in Mexico and Latin America, providing modern and efficient facilities for its passengers.
