The Payo Obispo Zoo, located in Chetumal, has reopened its doors to the public this weekend. After a nine-month hiatus, the zoo welcomed visitors once again on Saturday, March 15. The reopening was met with excitement from local families who were eager to return to this beloved recreational and educational space.
The reopening coincided with the 45th anniversary of the zoo's establishment. Over 3,000 residents of Chetumal attended the event, eager to explore the iconic venue. The highlight of the day was a tour featuring a small train that had been out of operation for over five years.
Children were especially delighted to reunite with their favorite animals, including "Maya" the hippopotamus, "Simba" the tiger, and "Casimira" the owl. Visitors also enjoyed a variety of activities offered by the nature park.
From early morning, families lined up to take advantage of the free admission. The queue gradually diminished and had dispersed by 2 pm. The reopening ceremony was presided over by Zoo Director Lorety Novelo Durán and Municipal Ecology Commission Councilor Benjamín Vaca González.
During the event, the officials recognized staff members Jorge Carlos Albornoz Mañe and Wilbert Santiago Meza for their dedication to animal welfare over the past 25 years.
