Cancún and Playa del Carmen, once known for their natural beauty and as top tourist destinations in Mexico and Latin America, are now gaining a global reputation for a darker reason. A recent arrest in Colombia has exposed a human trafficking network that forces women into sex work in these popular Mexican resorts. This illegal operation is just one example of international criminal organizations exploiting the tourism boom, often with the complicity of local officials.

The Colombian Attorney General's Office confirmed the arrest of Lix Verónica Novoa Montenegro, who is believed to be a key figure in this trafficking network. She is accused of luring young women into the criminal operation, which operates from Colombia and sends victims to Mexico for sexual exploitation. Despite denying the charges, she has been remanded in custody by a criminal judge.

Novoa Montenegro allegedly contacted her victims through social media, offering them employment in a five-star hotel in Cancún. However, upon arrival in Mexico, the women were met by a group who transported them to Playa del Carmen, a coastal area of Quintana Roo state.

Once there, the women were stripped of their documents and forced into sex work at a nightclub. They were told they had to pay off their transportation and living expenses. One woman managed to escape and reported the trafficking operation to authorities. Her testimony, along with evidence she collected while captive, led to the issuance of an arrest warrant.

The warrant was executed in the city of Villavicencio, Meta, by the Technical Investigation Team (CTI), the National Army, and the National Police. This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing issue of human trafficking and sexual exploitation in popular tourist destinations.
