Numerous complaints have been lodged against the shipping company Ultramar, with allegations of overcharging customers for ticket sales. The most recent incident involved two tourists who were charged double the listed price for round-trip tickets, paying 2,194 pesos instead of the advertised 1,160 pesos.
This practice has led to widespread dissatisfaction among visitors, particularly those staying on the island for extended periods. Several affected individuals have shared similar experiences on social media platforms. The incident in question took place at the Puerto Juárez terminal, but similar issues have been reported at ticket booths in the Cancun hotel zone. Despite suggestions that these overcharges could be due to confusion among ticket sellers, the problem persists.
For the past 16 months, Ultramar has operated without competition in Puerto Juárez, following the cessation of operations by the Jetway company on December 15, 2023, due to a decline in users. Despite offering more affordable prices for locals, no other company has expressed interest in competing, according to a recent report from the Port Captaincy.
In light of these alleged abuses, users such as Manuel Caamal and Rosario Pantoja have called on the Navy Secretariat and the Port Captaincy to investigate the matter, reach out to those affected, and, if necessary, penalize the shipping company. They expressed their concern that Ultramar seems to enjoy privileges from federal authorities, as it has not been subject to investigations despite regular irregularities, such as failing to adhere to schedules despite having sufficient vessels. They urge the promotion of alternatives for workers and users.
Cell Phone Theft Reported in Supermarket
Visitor Melanie Ricotta reported the theft of her cell phone at a local supermarket. She left her device unattended while shopping at the Super Aki in Historic Downtown, and upon tracking it, found it to be located in the southern part of the island, near the "Guru" establishment.
While there have been several reports of cell phone theft in the area, most devices have been recovered with the help of the Department of Tourism and local taxi drivers. The victim hopes to receive official assistance in recovering her device.
