The temporary stadium is nearly complete for one of the year’s biggest beach volleyball events, set to take place March 26–30 in front of the iconic Portal Maya in Playa del Carmen.
Playa del Carmen is gearing up to welcome the world’s top beach volleyball athletes as it prepares to host the Elite 16, part of the 2025 Beach Volleyball World Tour. This prestigious international tournament is one of two stops in Mexico—the first held earlier this month in Progreso, Yucatán.
“Playa del Carmen is ready to receive the best volleyball players in the world,” said Mayor Estefanía Mercado Ascencio. “This event supports Governor Mara Lezama’s efforts to position Quintana Roo as the number-one destination for sports tourism.”
What to Expect: A temporary stadium with seating for more than 2,000 spectators has already been constructed at Parque Fundadores, directly in front of the Portal Maya statue. The venue includes grandstands, signage, and official structures like judge towers—all nearly finalized and ready for the international spotlight.
This tournament is part of the Elite 16 series, featuring the top-ranked players on the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour. These matches are especially important as teams earn critical points toward their world rankings, which influence qualification for both the Beach Volleyball World Championships and the 2025 Olympic Games in Paris.
Who’s Competing: The Elite 16 Playa del Carmen will feature:
- 24 men’s and women’s teams
- Over 180 athletes
- 120 coaches
- 30 referees
- 16 international delegates
- And more than 10,000 spectators expected from around the globe
Countries represented include Argentina, Austria, Canada, Chile, England, USA, Estonia, Spain, France, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, and more.
