The beloved Chiapas Bakery in Cancún has sadly announced its closure. Despite over half a century of cherished family recipes, the business has fallen victim to alleged organized crime. The bakery, located in Cancún's Las Palmas district, has been forced to shut down due to supposed extortion demands, an issue which has become increasingly prevalent in the city in recent years.
The founder of the bakery, affectionately known as 'Grandma Materna', expressed her heartbreak at having to close the business. "It's devastating to tell my grandchildren that we must close because there are individuals in Cancún who see us as a lucrative opportunity. However, we are a small business and simply cannot afford to pay these demands. Thank you all for being a part of our history," she said.
The announcement of the bakery's closure sparked immediate reactions on social media, with the majority expressing support for 'Grandma's' bakery. While some suggested the closure might be due to administrative issues, the fact remains that the Chiapas Bakery is yet another casualty of the escalating insecurity and organized crime in Cancún.
