Revamped Cozumel Transport System: New Routes to Beach Resorts!

Cozumel's public transportation system is set to undergo a series of changes under the supervision of the island's transportation management staff. Despite the fact that not all routes within the system are currently operational, efforts are being made to restore the service. This week, the focus is on expanding routes to two popular public beach resorts, Casitas and Caletita.

The Adolfo López Mateos Taxi Union, the sole concessionaire of the city's urban public transport service, is grappling with a lack of resources. They currently do not have the necessary fleet to cover the city's required 16 routes, with only five routes currently in operation. These routes are being adapted as resources allow.

The concessionaire has been working to recover and repair vehicles abandoned by the previous board, aiming to fill the gaps in service. New streets have been added to the routes based on demand from certain sectors. In a new development, access to the public beaches on the west coast has been incorporated into the service, with weekend service planned for April.

Plans are also in place to extend the reach of other routes to include shopping centers on the island and remote neighborhoods that are currently underserved. These improvements have been long overdue, with several years having passed since the last significant changes to the system.
