Aeroméxico Fights Human Trafficking at Cancún Airport

Cancún, Mexico — Aeroméxico, in collaboration with federal authorities and nonprofit organizations, has unveiled a groundbreaking exhibition at Cancún International Airport to raise awareness about human trafficking. The initiative, titled "Open Your Eyes", features powerful visual displays, survivor testimonies, and educational materials aimed at travelers, airport staff, and the general public.

A Call to Action Against Human Trafficking

The exhibition, which opened this week in Terminal 3, is part of Aeroméxico’s broader corporate social responsibility campaign to combat human trafficking, particularly in high-tourism areas like Cancún. According to the airline, the project was developed in partnership with Mexico’s National Institute of Migration (INM) and the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women and Girls in Latin America and the Caribbean (CATWLAC).

Interactive kiosks provide information on how to identify potential trafficking victims, such as individuals who appear disoriented, fearful, or under the control of another person. Travelers are also encouraged to report suspicious activity via a dedicated hotline operated by the INM.

Survivor Stories and Expert Insights

One of the exhibition’s most impactful sections includes recorded testimonies from survivors, detailing their ordeals and the tactics used by traffickers. María (last name withheld for privacy), a survivor featured in the display, recounted being lured with false job offers before being forced into exploitation.

"Human trafficking often hides in plain sight," said Ana Paula Hernández, CATWLAC’s executive director, during the opening ceremony. "Airports are critical points of intervention, and this exhibition equips people with the knowledge to act."

Aeroméxico CEO Andrés Conesa emphasized the airline’s commitment to the cause, stating, "As a company that connects millions of passengers, we have a responsibility to protect the most vulnerable. This exhibition is a step toward ensuring safer travel for all."

Statistics Highlight Urgency

The exhibition also presents alarming data from Mexico’s Interior Ministry: over 5,000 human trafficking victims were identified in the country between 2020 and 2024, with Quintana Roo—home to Cancún—ranking among the top three states for reported cases. Globally, the International Labour Organization estimates that forced labor generates $150 billion annually in illicit profits.

The "Open Your Eyes" exhibition will remain at Cancún International Airport for three months before touring other major Mexican airports, including Mexico City and Guadalajara. Aeroméxico has pledged to expand the initiative internationally in 2025.
