Cancún, Quintana Roo — Violence once again stained the streets of Cancún red as a public transport driver was brutally gunned down Sunday night in the Santa Cecilia neighborhood. Authorities suspect the attack was a targeted retaliation linked to extortion schemes plaguing local transport operators.
A Brazen Assault in Broad Daylight
The shooting occurred on the main avenue of Santa Cecilia, near the exit to José López Portillo Avenue, when armed assailants on a motorcycle intercepted the driver close to a public transport terminal. Without warning, they opened fire multiple times, leaving the victim lying in the street as stunned residents and passersby looked on in silence.
The gunshots prompted a rapid response from emergency services and law enforcement. A private ambulance arrived to treat the victim, a man of average build who sustained multiple gunshot wounds. After stabilizing him, medics rushed him to the Jesús Kumate Rodríguez General Hospital, where he remains in serious condition.
Fear and Silence Grip the Community
State and federal police cordoned off the area, wary of a potential return by the attackers or further violence. Despite the security presence, no arrests were made—the assailants fled to an unknown location. Witnesses, paralyzed by fear of reprisals, refused to provide details to investigators.
The Santa Cecilia neighborhood, where extortion against public transport operators is a persistent threat, has grown accustomed to such violent incidents. The Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation to identify those responsible for the attack, which underscores the escalating insecurity in Cancún and its outskirts.
Meanwhile, the local transport industry remains on high alert, fearing further targeting.
