A tour boat, reported stolen from the island of Cozumel, was discovered washed up on the eastern coast of Isla Mujeres. The vessel, named "Sea Urchin," was found near the solid waste transfer station, stripped of its engines.
The boat, with a registration number 23041703146, was taken from the maritime reserve known as Caleta Cozumel in the early hours of Friday, May 3rd.
The "Sea Urchin" had recently been fitted with a new outboard engine worth over 400 thousand pesos. This is believed to have been the motivation behind the theft. When discovered by authorities in Isla Mujeres, the boat was already without its engine and stranded in the sand.
The vessel was spotted about three nautical miles from Isla Mujeres, around 4 pm on the same day it was stolen. It is suspected that after removing the engine, the thieves left the boat to drift. The currents eventually carried it to the shores of the Magic Town.
Local authorities and the Port Captaincy of Isla Mujeres were alerted to the situation. It is believed they have since contacted the owners of the "Sea Urchin" to arrange for its retrieval.
