Cancún, Quintana Roo — The city of Cancún marked its 55th anniversary with a vibrant celebration as more than 1,500 participants took part in the “Parade of the Cancunenses.” The event, held in the city’s foundational district, showcased the multicultural spirit and civic pride of the coastal destination.
A March Through History
The parade, led by Municipal Secretary of Wellbeing Berenice Sosa Osorio and Cancún District Director Carlos del Castillo Álvarez, featured 11 thematic blocks representing different facets of the city’s identity. The procession began at 4:00 p.m. along Chichén Itzá Avenue, winding through the iconic Tulum Avenue before concluding at City Hall.
“Cancún is made by all of us—it’s multicultural, and today we see that reflected in this parade,” said Sosa Osorio. “These 55 years may seem easy, but our goal is to care for our city together, citizens and government alike. This parade unites us as Cancunenses.”
Del Castillo Álvarez energized the crowd with chants of “Long live Cancún!” and “You see it, you feel it, Cancún is here!” as spectators, including locals and visitors, lined the streets to witness the festivities.
A Showcase of Cancún’s Diversity
The parade opened with a display of vintage cars from the Rally Maya México and the Cancún Antique Car Club, followed by a military band. The procession included themed segments such as:
- “Cancún is Pioneer”
- “Cancún is Mexico”
- “70’s”
- “Cancún is Culture”
- “Cancún is Tourism”
- “Cancún is Sports”
- “Cancún is Transformation”
Participants ranged from artists and athletes to civil associations, hotel industry workers, and municipal employees, representing all ages and backgrounds.
Festive Closing Celebrations
The event concluded with a ceremonial cake-cutting to honor Cancún’s 55th anniversary, accompanied by a performance of the traditional “Mañanitas” by the mariachi group “Vino Tinto.” Attendees also danced to tunes played by the Benito Juárez City Hall Band and a danzón ensemble.
The celebration underscored the city’s enduring legacy as a hub of culture, tourism, and community spirit.
