Eight people, including two minors, were injured in a serious accident involving two taxis on the Cancun-Leona Vicario federal highway. Five of the injured were rushed to the hospital.
The accident occurred late in the evening on Thursday, May 2. A call to emergency services was made just after 9:00 p.m., with the drivers reporting the collision. However, no further details were provided about the circumstances leading up to the incident.
Initial reports suggest that two medical units were dispatched to the scene following the collision. Firefighters and Civil Protection personnel were already on site, providing first aid to the victims.
The taxis involved, both belonging to the Cancun 'Andrés Quintana Roo' Taxi Union, ended up off the road and in a bushy area on the side of the highway. Of the eight people injured, five required immediate hospitalization at the 'Jesús Kumate Rodríguez' General Hospital. This group included the two minors who were injured.
As of yet, there have been no statements from the Secretary General of the taxi drivers or authorities from Cancun and Puerto Morelos regarding the accident or the condition of the victims.
The National Guard has taken over the investigation as the accident occurred on a federal highway. The taxis involved have been moved to a pound for further investigation and to determine responsibility for the accident.
