Cancún, Quintana Roo — Three rescues, two missing persons, and one recovery of a deceased individual mark the toll of the first week of Holy Week vacations in Cancún. These incidents were handled by the Benito Juárez Civil Protection Directorate.
Antonio Riveroll Ribbon, director of Civil Protection in Cancún, stated that all those affected were tourists.
"During the week, we conducted three sea rescues and, sadly, recovered one body last week. Additionally, since Sunday, we have been searching for a person who entered the water and was pulled under by the current."
Two tourists from Michigan, USA, entered the sea at Chac Mool Beach. A woman was rescued, but the man disappeared in the water. Lifeguards filed a report after the woman began calling for help. She was assisted by a lifeguard and brought to shore, but authorities lost sight of the man due to strong waves.
"The search concluded at midnight on Sunday and resumed early yesterday," Riveroll Ribbon said.
He noted that red flags had been posted on beaches, as the port had been closed the previous day due to unsafe conditions for swimmers. The official emphasized that beachgoers should always swim at public beaches, where lifeguards are available to respond to emergencies, and heed flag warnings.
A red flag indicates that entering the water is unsafe, while green signals safe conditions. Yellow advises caution, depending on swimming ability.
"At public beaches, lifeguards indicate whether it is safe to enter the water based on conditions. Some people ignore this and seek out unguarded areas to swim, which poses a risk."
Riveroll Ribbon added that such disregard for safety measures can lead to dangerous situations, as seen last Sunday.
