“Tourism Crisis in Puerto Juárez: Cooperatives Struggle after Jetway’s Exit”

Colorful boats docked at a marina with clear turquoise waters and blue skies in a tropical setting.

The cessation of Jetway's operations has dealt a significant blow to cooperatives in Puerto Juárez. The company's departure has led to a sharp decline in tourist traffic to the dock of the Administración Portuaria Integral de Quintana Roo (Apiqroo).

Cooperatives in Puerto Juárez, which provide tourist services, are struggling to recover. The season has been significantly impacted due to issues with the route boats at the Jetway dock, which have been out of service for months on the crossing to Isla Mujeres.

Jetway's presence was beneficial for us as we could offer our services to the tourists arriving at the dock. However, we are now operating at a mere 20 percent capacity," said a representative of the cooperatives. "Of the 130 boats across the three cooperatives operating at the site, it's a dire situation. During peak season, we used to operate at 70 percent capacity, and sometimes even at 100 percent when the boats were here," they added.

The representative also suggested that if the government could station three or four boats at this dock, it would greatly assist in their recovery. Similarly, promoting these cooperatives could also provide a much-needed boost.
