The recent decree designating Chetumal as a Free Zone will provide significant benefits to Puerto Morelos, particularly in terms of foreign trade. This fiscal measure will facilitate maritime trade routes and enhance the flow of supply cargo ships docking in Puerto Morelos.
The decree encourages merchants and businesses to set up operations in Quintana Roo, utilizing the entire stretch from Chetumal to the port for import and export activities. It offers several benefits for businesses, depending on their final destination. For instance, goods arriving in Puerto Morelos are not necessarily subject to taxes immediately upon arrival. Instead, with special customs seals, these goods can reach their final destination in the state capital before any taxes are due.
The same principle applies to exports. Companies that set up manufacturing, production, or assembly operations in the area can ship their products to destinations like Florida without paying taxes upon departure from Chetumal, thereby retaining their benefits. These goods can arrive sealed in Puerto Morelos and then be shipped to the United States, fostering a collaborative trade environment.
Puerto Morelos boasts both the necessary infrastructure and available space to facilitate this increased trade activity. It has ample dock space for ships and the capacity to handle the influx of goods. Economic growth is expected to increase gradually as negotiations and trade deals take place.
At present, there are no specific projections for potential growth as the first step involves attracting national and foreign companies to establish operations in the fiscal precinct. The Puerto Morelos Apiqroo currently receives 12 weekly vessels, with goods distributed throughout the state, not just in the northern zone. The implementation of the Free Zone decree is expected to maintain, if not increase, the number of vessels arriving in Puerto Morelos, thereby stimulating both import and export activities.
