The director of FONATUR, Rogelio Jiménez Pons, and the Secretary of National Defense, General Luis Cresencio Sandoval González, also participated in this site tour.

President López Obrador arrived in Chetumal on a commercial flight. The group then flew in a Bell 12 helicopter, courtesy of the Mexican Air Force, over section 5 south of the Mayan Train. The officials arrived in Tulum to supervise the proposed site of the train station and the location planned for the new international airport.

Once completed, the Mayan train will travel a distance of approximately 1,500 km and will pass through the states of Chiapas, Tabasco, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo.

The construction of the first section of the Mayan Train will conclude in 2023. In total, it is estimated that the Tren Maya will generate half a million direct and indirect jobs for the people living in southern Mexico.

The Mayan Train will have three types of trains: Xiinbal, Janal and P’atal, which will offer various amenities and routes according to the types of travelers: local passengers, long-stay tourists and cargo.

There will be a total of 42 railway cars, representing an investment of 36.564 million pesos. French and Canadian companies have been charged with the build of the cars in the Ciudad Sahagún plant located in the state of Hidalgo.
