The President of the Mexican Chamber of the Construction Industry (CMIC), Ulises Morales Estrada, has stated that the significant delays in the construction of sections 6 and 7 of the Maya Train project mean it is unlikely to be completed before President Andrés Manuel López Obrador leaves office in September.

Due to the significant resources already invested in the project, Morales insists that the incoming administration must continue the work. He pointed out that deadlines set for February, June, and now September are unlikely to be met given the current pace of construction.

The Maya Train project, a flagship initiative of the current president, has received substantial funding and cannot be left unfinished, Morales emphasized.

According to unofficial reports from the Mexican Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), the construction of the Chetumal and Bacalar stations is approximately 70 percent complete. However, they will not be finished by the planned June deadline. The Maya Train workshops, located at the former Expofer site, are still in the early stages of constructing the embankment.

Further delays are reported for bridges being constructed near the Public Security Secretariat's police school facilities and another on the federal highway adjacent to the future Maya Train workshops.

For section 7, which extends towards the state of Campeche, Sedena data indicates that 90 percent of the 509 kilometers still lack a track. The ballast has not been placed, and the construction of the embankment, which will support the sleepers and rails, has not yet begun.

Currently, there are 17,200 workers and 5,800 heavy machinery units employed on sections 6 and 7 of the Maya Train project.
