The Yucatan Government has officially declared a dry law for the upcoming elections on Sunday, June 2, 2024. The announcement was made today in the state's Official Gazette, signed by the Secretary of Health, Mauricio Sauri Vivas. This law prohibits the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages in the region during the election period.
The legislation, which mandates this prohibition, applies both on the election day and the preceding day. The Chairman of the Electoral and Citizen Participation Institute of Yucatan, Moisés Bates Aguilar, had previously requested the State Government's cooperation in enforcing this law in a document dated May 20.
Under the agreement, and in accordance with Article 253-F of the Health Law, the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages will be prohibited in several places including beer outlets, liquor stores, self-service stores, warehouses and distributors of alcoholic beverages, nightclubs, discos, cabarets, cantinas, restaurants, pizzerias, bars, video bars, dance halls, and reception halls.
The dry law will take effect from the first minute of June 1, 2024, and will last until 11 am on Monday, June 3, 2024. Penalties for non-compliance have been outlined in the agreement. Individuals or establishments that fail to adhere to the law will face administrative or criminal penalties as per the applicable regulations.
Fines for non-compliance can range from one to 500 Measurement and Update Units, equivalent to 108.57 pesos to 54,285 pesos. Despite appeals from the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry, the dry law will be in effect for restaurants in Mexico from next Saturday.
