The Maya Train, a major transportation project led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, continues to disrupt the ecosystem along Section 5 South, a stretch between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. This 65-kilometer region houses a network of underground rivers which are now being polluted due to the construction process.
The project, overseen by the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena), involves drilling into the earth to place metal beams. These beams are now rusting, leading to contamination of the water.
Activists opposing the Maya Train project have documented the extensive environmental damage in the Quintana Roo area. Experienced diver, José Urbina, has highlighted the deteriorating conditions of the aquifer due to the rusting metal introduced into the water.
In a video shared on Twitter, Urbina explained how the water temperature has significantly increased. He attributes this to deforestation, which allows the sun to directly heat the water, impacting the local fauna and vegetation. He also pointed out the dust from the drilling process, which contaminates the entire water network, affecting even the mangroves and reefs.
Urbina noted the visible rust pollution in the water, stating, "This is bound to disappear, the metal structure of the cylinder serves no support function. It was anticipated in the planning that this would rust and dissolve in the water." He added that this construction method has compromised the purity of the water.
