Must-Visit Magical Towns in Quintana Roo
Bacalar
Bacalar, a magical town nestled on the shores of Laguna de Bacalar, will capture your heart with its rich history and lush natural beauty. The main attraction here is the Lagoon of the Seven Colors, a breathtaking body of water that reflects different shades of blue from the sun’s rays. The lagoon is connected to the XulHá Lagoon through a narrow waterway known as Los Rápidos. Here, you can find stromatolites, ancient carbonate structures formed by oxygen-releasing bacteria. Explore the lagoon by kayak, sailboat, or catamaran, and savor local dishes while taking in the view at the San Felipe Fort Museum.
Cozumel
Cozumel, also known as the “land of swallows,” beckons visitors with its clear turquoise waters. The island is home to seven stunning reefs—Paraiso, Chankanaab, Yucab, San Francisco, Santa Rosa, Palancar, and Maracaibo—perfect for diving. Relax on the white sandy beaches, including Playa Palancar, Playa Mia, Playa San Francisco, and Playa Paradise. Stroll through downtown Cozumel, or San Miguel, where you can find shops, restaurants, bars, and art galleries. Don’t miss the chance to snorkel in the Cozumel Reef National Park, known for its impressive coral formations and diverse marine life.
Isla Mujeres
Isla Mujeres, a picturesque island surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, is renowned for its charming atmosphere and abundant marine life. The island is the first place in Mexico to be touched by the sunrise and offers a panoramic view of the sunset. The island is home to the world’s largest underwater sculpture park, featuring over 400 works by contemporary sculptors from around the globe. Enjoy water activities, explore the sculpture park, and don’t miss the chance to swim at Playa Norte and watch the sunset at the island’s southern tip.
Tulum
Tulum, a mystical town in the Riviera Maya, is filled with terraces and handicraft shops. The town is unique for being the only Mayan city built by the sea. Its ancient buildings and murals are well-preserved, and the Castle, the town’s highest construction, features a temple with serpentine columns and zoomorphic mascarons. Visit the archaeological zone to admire the Temple of the Descending God and the Castle, dive into one of the numerous cenotes, and explore the dreamy beaches.
In 2024, several more towns in Quintana Roo were added to the Pueblos Mágicos list, bringing the total number of magical towns in the country to 177. These towns met the requirements set out in the “Call for the Appointment of Magical Towns 2023” and are now recognized for their unique charm and appeal.
