This past Saturday, a demonstration organized by the Searching Mothers Collective of Quintana Roo, along with other groups and supporters, caused a significant disruption in Cancún's city center. The protesters blocked Kukulcán Boulevard in the city's hotel zone, demanding justice and answers for the disappearance of 17-year-old Francisca Mariner Flores Patrón.
Francisca's mother, María Patrón Pat, has not received any news about her daughter's whereabouts since June 22, 2020. The protest extended from the popular Caracol Square to beyond the Calinda Bridge, causing considerable traffic congestion.
In response, authorities opened both lanes of the climb towards Cancún International Airport to alleviate the gridlock. The group of approximately 20 protestors was closely monitored by a large number of agents from the Preventive Police and Transit.
The march culminated at the State Attorney General's Office on Bonampak Avenue, aiming to raise awareness about the issue of disappearances and demand action from the authorities. The organizers emphasized their primary goal of drawing attention to the need for justice and the relentless search for their missing loved ones.
These demonstrations reflect the growing desperation and urgency of families affected by the disappearance of their children and loved ones, a problem that has been escalating in the region. The march to the State Attorney General's Office is a plea for authorities to intensify their efforts in finding missing people and provide tangible answers and solutions to the grieving families.
