Despite challenging weather conditions affecting water-based activities, Majahual continues to maintain a steady hotel occupancy rate of 30 to 35%. Even amidst heavy rainfall and strong waves, the beaches remain free of sargassum. This has been a major draw for both national and international tourists.
The sargassum barrier, a joint effort by the Naval Secretariat and local business owners, has proven effective in reducing the presence of the problematic seaweed. This has allowed for uninterrupted enjoyment of the beaches and has kept the tourism industry thriving.
Local tourism service providers are optimistic about the upcoming summer season. They anticipate a surge in demand that will further stimulate the region's economy. Rodolfo Espadas Ixte, Vice President of the Costa Maya Tourist Business Association, confirmed that there have been no hotel booking cancellations to date. This bodes well for the upcoming holiday season.
Local businesses remain vigilant of changes in maritime conditions and stand ready to implement protective measures if necessary. This proactive approach ensures the continued appeal of Majahual as a tourist destination.
