“El Cuyo Holiday Season Fails to Impress: What Went Wrong?”

The holiday season got off to a slow start this past weekend in the port town of El Cuyo. Service providers were left disappointed as visitor numbers fell short of expectations. By 3 p.m., the Municipal Police had only recorded the arrival of 150 people and 30 vehicles.

In contrast to previous holiday seasons, where the beach area was bustling with families, only a few huts were occupied this time. The beach was noticeably less crowded, with very few people swimming. The usual presence of street vendors and snack sellers was also missing.

According to local businesses, the rainy weather had a detrimental impact on the first vacation weekend. There were no room reservations and restaurants were largely empty. The majority of the visitors were day-trippers from Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tizimín.

Some families from Quintana Roo who had come specifically for the fair at the Colonia Yucatán police station, took advantage of their visit to spend the afternoon at the beach. However, the Ortiz family from Colonia Yucatán and three families from Cancún expressed disappointment at the lack of atmosphere in the port, describing it as "dull".

They mentioned that while they frequently visit El Cuyo for its tranquillity, the town lacks adequate services, including sufficient bathrooms and showers. Aurora del Carmen Castillo Salsero, a visitor from Playa del Carmen, echoed these sentiments.

Local tour guides, who usually set up near the pier, expressed regret that the annual El Cuyo Fest will not be taking place this year. The event typically brings them a good income and benefits local businesses. They suggested that while locals are willing to participate, the event organizers lack the motivation to carry it out.

Despite the slow start to the holiday season, the port continues to expand its offering of food establishments and accommodation centers.
