“Maya Train Booms with New Routes!”

The popular Maya Train has expanded its commercial services, adding two new routes due to a surge in ticket purchases from both domestic and international tourists. The new Cancun-Merida route is now available at 11:45 a.m., and the Merida-Cancun route at 2:40 p.m., starting from July 26th. Tickets can be conveniently purchased online or directly at the Maya Train station counters.

There are now a total of eight services available, including:

• 9:00 a.m. Palenque-Cancun
• 9:30 a.m. Cancun-Palenque
• 7:00 a.m. Campeche-Cancun
• 4:30 p.m. Cancun-Campeche
• 7:00 a.m. Mérida-Playa del Carmen
• 5:30 p.m. Playa del Carmen-Mérida

The Maya Train recently set a new record, transporting over 3,000 passengers in a single weekend. From December 16, 2023, to July 23, 2024, the train carried a total of 276,825 passengers across various routes connecting ancient and modern Maya cities. The most popular route among tourists is the 3rd section from Calkini, Campeche, to Izamal, Yucatan, with 73,143 passengers transported, including 3,575 children and 69,568 adults.

The 3rd section spans 160 kilometers across 15 municipalities in Campeche and Yucatan, featuring six stations: Calkini, Maxcanu, Uman, Merida-Teya, Tixkokob, and Izamal. A significant feature of this route is the 60-kilometer stretch of electrified double track starting from Merida.

The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) is constructing 690 kilometers of electrified tracks in the Yucatan Peninsula for the Maya Train, an area larger than the Netherlands, Denmark, and Switzerland combined. The CFE is also involved in the creation of the Nachi Cocom Photovoltaic Plant in Yucatan, which will supply energy to the electric buses of the Ie-Tram public transport system, as well as the Maya Train.

The construction of the 3rd section has resulted in numerous infrastructure improvements, including 34 vehicular crossings, 153 drainage works, three viaducts, and 100 social works such as sports spaces, schools, electricity networks, street rehabilitation, clinics, and public lighting. The 3rd section infrastructure also includes a Data Processing Center for governmental and administrative management systems, the Railroad Operations Center, and the Terminal.
