Residents of Quintana Roo, Mexico continue to fall victim to crimes that threaten their lives, personal safety, freedom, and property. A report from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP) reveals a disturbing trend of kidnappings, sexual abuse, murders, injuries, and child exploitation from the start of 2023 to mid-2024. Last year saw a total of 9,478 reports for these crimes. However, by June 2024, the number of complaints had already reached 4,844, a shocking 51.1 percent of the previous year's total.

The SESNSP report highlights that the highest number of severe crimes in the Mexican Caribbean region are injuries, with 8,674 cases reported from 2023 to June 2024. Homicides, in all forms, have resulted in 2,645 victims. Crimes against personal freedom, including all types of kidnapping, account for 2,156 victims. Worryingly, there have been 198 reports of child exploitation during the same 18-month period.

One such case is that of Karla, who suffered sexual abuse at the hands of a relative. “It’s a chapter of my life I wish I could erase. It wasn't just the act itself, but everything that followed,” she shared, her voice breaking with the strain of retelling her ordeal. Karla, or Kaly as she is known to her family and friends, explained that her abuser was a frequent visitor to her home, a trusted member of their close-knit community. He was a regular presence at family celebrations and never showed any inappropriate behavior towards her or the other girls, so there was no reason to suspect him.

Karla's nightmare began in May 2023 when she was left alone with her abuser. They had just returned from a soccer match and found the house empty. The man decided to stay in the living room to watch a series. Karla, feeling hot and sweaty, went upstairs to take a shower. Fifteen minutes later, she found her abuser had followed her. The traumatic event unfolded so quickly that Karla struggled to comprehend what was happening. As soon as it was over, the man left the house.

When her family returned home, they found Karla in tears. She bravely recounted her ordeal, leading her family to confront the man at his home. His mother, despite being told of the severity of her son's actions, refused to believe the accusations. Karla then reported the crime to the authorities, a process she described as another form of torture due to the repetitive questioning and invasive medical examination. The abuser's family helped him flee the state, maintaining his innocence and denying the accusations.
