In Tulum, a group of cyclists has installed a white bicycle in memory of a woman who tragically lost her life in a cycling accident involving a trailer. The cyclists have used this symbolic act to call on local authorities to construct a bypass that would divert heavy vehicles away from the busy avenue where the accident occurred.

The memorial was attended by members of the Tulum Mexican Bicycle Embassy, local entrepreneurs, and both local and international cyclists. They gathered to pay their respects to Delinda Pérez Martínez, a female cyclist who was fatally struck by a tractor-trailer at the intersection of Ok’kot and Osiris streets in Tulum.

Tulum residents are urging for a shared responsibility between authorities, motorists, and cyclists to prevent such accidents from happening in the future. Karla, a Tulum resident, emphasized the need for responsibility, respect, and road civility. She also stressed the importance of infrastructure development, such as a bypass, to prevent cargo trucks from entering urban areas.

Karla stated, “That is why I say it is a shared responsibility. The community and government need to work together. The government can help us by installing infrastructure and signs, but as cyclists, we also have the responsibility to wear helmets and pay attention to stop signs to avoid accidents.” She believes that it is not solely the government's responsibility to prevent accidents, but that cyclists also need to respect traffic signs.
