Dozens of devout Catholics convened in the historic center of Mérida to kick off the San Sebastián guilds with the lowering of the Assumption of the Virgin. This tradition, which draws hundreds of people annually, began on the morning of Saturday, August 3rd.
The event, captured by local media, showcased the enduring Catholic faith that permeates the streets of the historic center, particularly in the San Sebastián neighborhood. This area is one of the few that still maintains these deeply rooted traditions.
The festivities include traditions like the "little bulls," where a unique animal made of plastic and cardboard becomes the centerpiece of the celebration. This event commences with the lowering of the Assumption of the Virgin.
In Yucatán, these guilds are held in honor of the Virgin, providing a blend of religious observance and family-friendly entertainment.
