The Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (IMOVEQROO) has intensified its surveillance and inspections in Cancun and Playa del Carmen to curb unauthorized public transportation fare increases. Nine vehicles were impounded in Playa del Carmen this Friday due to fare hikes. Over 20 vehicles have been impounded so far, with the operations set to continue until fares are returned to the levels set by IMOVEQROO. The Institute has invited transport operators to engage in dialogue to resolve the issue.
IMOVEQROO's director, Rodrigo Alcázar Urrutia, emphasized that no state-concessioned vehicle is permitted to increase fares without authorization. Doing so constitutes a serious violation of the Quintana Roo State Mobility Law. Penalties for unauthorized fare increases range from 151 to 700 Measurement and Update Units (UMAs) and could also result in the revocation of the operator's concession.
Operators who violate the law risk fines of up to 70,000 pesos and the impounding of their vehicles. Alcázar Urrutia stated that these operations will continue daily. Several routes in Cancun and Playa del Carmen have been inspected, with plans to expand the operations to more routes. These operations will be ongoing, responding to complaints from users.
At the Plaza de las Americas in Playa del Carmen, IMOVEQROO confirmed user reports of fare increases, resulting in the impounding of several vehicles for this serious violation.
Public transportation users have expressed their support for these operations, as the fare increases have negatively impacted their finances. At the inspection checkpoints, officials informed users that no fare increases have been authorized. Users were reimbursed, transported to their destinations, and the offending vehicles were impounded.
IMOVEQROO is committed to maintaining these operations in both Playa del Carmen and Cancun. The Institute will not tolerate any irregularities in fare charges, in line with the New Agreement for the Welfare and Development of Quintana Roo, promoted by Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa.
To further assist the public, IMOVEQROO has established a complaint line for public transport, available via WhatsApp at 9831853403. The line will be operational from Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:00 hours, where citizens can receive assistance.
