Mexico's President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has announced a temporary halt in relations with the US and Canadian embassies. This decision follows recent comments from US Ambassador Ken Salazar and Canadian Ambassador Graeme C. Clark regarding a proposed constitutional reform to Mexico's judiciary.

While López Obrador clarified that relations with the US and Canadian governments will continue, he emphasized that Mexico's national sovereignty will be respected throughout his term. He hopes for a reaffirmation from both countries that they will respect Mexico's independence and sovereignty.

"The relationship continues, but we hope for confirmation from them that they will respect our country's independence and sovereignty. Until that happens, and while they maintain their current policy, there will be a pause with the embassy," the President stressed.

López Obrador did not dismiss the possibility that Ambassador Salazar's comments were directed by the US State Department. He stated that while everyone has the right to voice their opinion, the ambassadors' remarks were imprudent.

"We're not going to say: 'leave the country'. But we do have to read the Constitution," he noted.

The President reminded everyone that Mexico's foreign policy is guided by Article 89 of the Constitution, which mandates adherence to the principles of non-intervention, self-determination of peoples, and peaceful resolution of conflicts.

López Obrador expressed his desire for a reciprocal relationship based on respect for sovereignties. He emphasized that foreign entities should respect decisions made by Mexico's legitimate, legally constituted government in their democratic processes.

"We will wait and see how things develop. If there is no respect, as long as I'm here, we will not tolerate any violation of our sovereignty," he affirmed.
