Quintana Roo Governor, Mara Lezama Espinosa, has confirmed that the Ichkabal archaeological site will open to the public next week. The site, situated in the Bacalar municipality, will be inaugurated by the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador. During the inauguration, Governor Espinosa and President López Obrador will tour the site.
Alongside the Ichkabal site opening, the President and Governor will visit other archaeological sites that have been restored and conserved through the Program for the Improvement of Archaeological Sites (Promeza). This program runs concurrently with the construction of the Tren Maya.
Governor Espinosa also announced the establishment of a Research Center, run by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH). The center will be located in the Archaeological Zone of San Miguelito, in the Cancun Hotel Zone. The center will focus on preserving archaeological artifacts discovered during the construction of the Mayan Train throughout the state.
The Ichkabal archaeological zone, featuring larger structures than those at Chichen Itza, is eagerly anticipated in southern Quintana Roo. Its potential to attract visitors is significant. The site is conveniently located 40 kilometers west of the Bacalar lagoon, 9 kilometers northeast of the Dzibanche and Kinichna sites, and close to the Kohunlich archaeological site and the Majahual Cruise Port.
In preparation for the public opening, the National Defense Secretary (Sedena) has constructed a paved road from the Tren Maya station in Bacalar to Ichkabal. The Director of INAH Quintana Roo Center, Margarito Molina Rendon, confirmed in an interview that the opening date will be Saturday, September 7th.
