In Akumal, swimming and sea turtle spotting activities are put on hold for the month of September. This decision, made by local tourism sector workers, is part of a broader effort to diversify their offerings with other recreational activities.
This suspension is part of the Akumal Bay Management Plan. This plan, put into action by the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp) and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), also halts turtle activities during February and Mondays. The goal of these measures is to respect the bay's carrying capacity.
The 32 cooperatives operating in Akumal are working closely with the Port Captaincy, Semarnat, and Conanp. Their goal is to ensure that no activities involving turtles take place during this period. This allows the marine flora and fauna to flourish without interruption.
As an alternative, a variety of safe and sustainable recreational options will be available. These include sport fishing, snorkeling in the Yal Kú and Media Luna lagoons, and cenote tours. Other options such as cultural excursions, kayak rides, and beach walks will also be on offer.
