IMSS Plans Healthcare Expansion in Quintana Roo for Better Services

The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) plans to expand healthcare services for policyholders in Quintana Roo. The institute is making progress in establishing a Family Medicine Unit (UMF) in Chemuyil, and two more in Solidaridad.

Javier Michael Naranjo García, the state delegate of the IMSS, confirmed that locations for these new UMFs have been identified. Currently, the projects are in the stages of land use studies and other preliminary processes before construction can begin.

García stated, "We need to expand. Our growth will continue in the coming years. We need at least two more UMFs in Solidaridad, and possibly a hospital in a more remote location, like the planned 90-bed facility in Tulum."

He added, "In Cancun, we also need at least one or two additional UMFs and another regional hospital. We're aiming for that, and there are more growth projects in the pipeline."

These projects aim to balance the workload across the state. The IMSS plans to collaborate with IMSS-Welfare through a nationwide agreement. This will allow the two institutions to share resources and infrastructure for the benefit of their patients.

García clarified that although the two institutions share a name, they are separate entities, serving different populations with different resources and staff. This agreement will enable them to provide more comprehensive services to the entire population.

Javier Cruz Rivera, head of the Affiliation and Collection Services in the state, reported a significant increase in affiliation. Currently, eight out of ten residents in Quintana Roo are affiliated with Social Security. The state has approximately 520,000 insured workers, 21,000 registered employers, and over 550,000 contributors.

Despite ranking 15th in total affiliates, Quintana Roo has been among the top three states for affiliation growth since 2021, rebounding from the labor decline caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
