In Quintana Roo, two young sailors are making their state proud. Mia Acuña, from the Puerto Aventuras Sailing Club, and Otis Cardow, from Bacalar, have been chosen by the Mexican Sailing Federation to compete in the Optimist World Championship. The championship will take place in Argentina from December 5 to 15.
Acuña and Cardow will be guided by their team leader, Tomás Bayon, coach of the Puerto Aventuras Sailing Club. Bayon has been instrumental in their training, and his guidance will be crucial for their performance at the world championship in Mar de Plata.
Adriana Quiterio, the head of the Sailing Association of Quintana Roo, expressed her pride in the young sailors. "It's an honor for us that Mia and Otis will represent Quintana Roo on this significant international stage. They may be young, but their performance and passion for sailing are immense," she said.
Quintana Roo's sailing has had a successful year, taking the championship at the 2024 CONADE National Games. The achievements of this year demonstrate the continuous effort by the Sailing Association and its athletes to elevate the level of competition.
Looking ahead, the Association is already planning the 2024-2025 state circuit. This will give rise to new talents who, having started as beginners, are prepared to face advanced competitions. "It's incredibly rewarding to see the sport we promote continue to grow and develop new champions," Quiterio remarked. The first qualifying event of the 2025 cycle will kick off in Cancún, from October 11 to 13. This marks the beginning of a new phase for Quintana Roo sailing, which continues to establish itself as a powerhouse. With young sailors like Mia and Otis, the future of sailing is indeed promising.
