Solidaridad Braces for Impact of Tropical Storm ‘Helene’

Officials gathered for a meeting in a conference room with the Quintana Roo state emblem and a weather map on display.

As Tropical Storm 'Helene' approaches, Solidaridad, Playa del Carmen has been placed on Yellow Alert. This has prompted the convening of an Extraordinary Session of Meteorological Phenomena, chaired by President Lili Campos. The meeting was held to discuss the necessary actions to be taken during the storm.

President Campos stated that although only heavy rainfall is expected in Solidaridad, she urged residents to stay updated through official news outlets. She highlighted the importance of staying informed as the storm is developing rapidly and could potentially cause flooding.

The Secretary of Civil Protection, Risk Prevention and Firefighters announced the preparation of seven temporary shelters. Five of these shelters will be located in Playa del Carmen and two in the Puerto Aventuras town hall. These shelters have a total capacity of 1110 people.

In addition to the temporary shelters, there are 56 self-shelters, which are hotels that have been inspected and approved by Civil Protection. These hotels are prepared to ensure the safety of tourists in Solidaridad during the storm.

According to Benny Millán, the Secretary of Public Services, teams of workers are currently clearing grates on streets and avenues to help mitigate the effects of the anticipated rainfall. These efforts are aimed at reducing the impact of the hydrometeorological phenomenon.
