Discover Cancun’s Vibrant Food Culture with Over 3,000 Restaurants

Cancun, a popular tourist destination, is home to around three thousand restaurants, while the entire state boasts more than 12,000. These eateries range from everyday dining spots to Michelin-starred establishments, attracting culinary enthusiasts or 'foodies'. The diverse flavors offered in this region contribute to Mexico's rich gastronomic landscape, where culinary tourism has seen a growth of at least 15 percent.

While Cancun's beaches and natural beauty are a major draw, there's a growing segment of tourists seeking a different kind of experience. These 'foodies' are interested in exploring local cuisine and relishing new flavors. They are known to spend between $800 to $1,200 per meal, seeking out regional dishes that offer a distinct taste compared to other global cuisines.

To cater to this burgeoning market, over 30 gastronomic events have been organized this year alone. These include barbecues in cenotes, seaside dinners, and meals prepared by traditional cooks. Additionally, there are over 1,000 street stalls selling Mexican snacks, including the famous tacos with fillings like carnitas, pastor, cabeza, lengua, and barbacoa.

Rebeca Bravo Leon, President of the Association of Downtown Hotels, noted that many tourists, both domestic and international, are more interested in traditional street food than gourmet cuisine. Popular choices include panuchos, tamales, salbutes, cochinita sandwiches, broths, and traditional sweets like marquesita, Yucatecan flan, and ice creams.

She further mentioned that guests at downtown hotels often inquire about where they can find local dishes. In response, some travel agencies offer tours of the city center, including visits to marketplaces 23 and 28, and renowned taquerias. The cost for these meals ranges between 60 and 100 pesos, and tourists greatly value this authentic culinary experience.
