Environmental Group Urges Action on Maya Train Eco Impact

As Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo assumes her role as the President of Mexico, the environmental group "Save Me From the Train MX" is calling on her to address the environmental impact of the Maya Train project. The group is hopeful that Sheinbaum, with her background in environmental science, will prioritize the protection of Mexico's natural resources.

The group formed in response to the potential environmental damage caused by the Maya Train, particularly in Section 5 South, from Playa del Carmen to Tulum. They have documented significant changes to the ecosystem due to the construction work.

The Maya Train project began construction in January 2022 and is now operational in Quintana Roo. Some members of the "Save Me From the Train MX" group have filed lawsuits against the project, alleging violations of the right to a healthy environment.

With Sheinbaum's ascent to leadership, the group is advocating for a more open dialogue with the new president. They expressed their hope that under her leadership, Mexico will prioritize efforts to protect and restore its natural and cultural wealth, ensuring a sustainable future for the country and its people.

In her inaugural speech, President Sheinbaum announced plans to expand the Maya Train and the freight train, with the project now expected to extend to Puerto Progreso, Yucatan. Despite initial difficulties attracting passengers, the project continues to move forward.
