Crime Rates Soar in Southern Quintana Roo

Southern Quintana Roo is experiencing an increase in crime, particularly in communities that were previously considered low-risk, according to Julio César Gómez Torres, Secretary of Citizen Security. "The crime rate has been rising in these southern municipalities, and we are taking action to address it," he stated.

However, Gómez Torres also highlighted that other municipalities are witnessing a decrease in crime. For instance, Cozumel has seen a 23% reduction in homicides this year, Tulum by 12%, and Solidaridad and Benito Juarez by 6% each. Isla Mujeres, however, has experienced the most significant decrease, with a 60% reduction in crime.

"Improving security is not an overnight process. We are working to enhance our institutional capabilities," Gómez Torres said. He noted that new police groups, such as the Investigation Police and State Roads, have been formed this year, in addition to strengthening the intelligence group and technological capabilities.

Gómez Torres also mentioned the establishment of the University of Sciences and Disciplines of Security, which has already started offering two degrees: citizen security and peacebuilding, and criminology and criminal policy. Furthermore, the Centurion Group has been set up to specifically tackle the issue of extortions.
