133 Quintana Roo Development Projects Brought Before SEMERNAT

So far this year, a total of 133 Quintana Roo development projects with environmental impact have been settled in the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat). Quintana Roo is the state of the Republic with the highest number of cases before the agency in charge of the protection of the Mexican environment and ecosystems.

According to the 24th issue of the Ecological Gazette 2021, all the municipalities of the state have projects that will impact the environment. Among them, hotels, real estate developments, shopping centers, exclusive clubs, private homes and changes in the use of forest land for forest or commercial use. These also include plans for the construction of docks and the “stabilization” of beaches.

The municipality with the highest number of projects is Benito Juárez, with 26; followed by Solidaridad, with 20, and Tulum, with 18. Bacalar has 17; Lázaro Cárdenas, 16; Cozumel, 11; Isla Mujeres, 10, and Puerto Morelos, seven. At the bottom of the list are Othón P. Blanco with six, and Felipe Carrillo Puerto and José María Morelos with one, respectively.

The projects reported above, private, social, and public, are additional to the construction of the section of the Mayan Train which will run through Quintana Roo.
