“Hurricane Milton Claims Life in Mexico: Latest Updates and Impact”

Hurricane Milton has claimed at least one life in Mexico and caused minor damage in the country's southern regions. The fatal incident occurred in Isla Arena, Calkiní, Campeche, when a local resident helping to secure boats fell into the sea and drowned. As of the afternoon of October 8, Mexico's meteorological authorities reported that Milton had intensified to a category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

Although the hurricane's center is now moving away from the Yucatán coast, authorities warn that the storm’s rainbands will continue to affect the region's weather. The forecast predicts heavy rainfall, with accumulations of between 75 and 150 mm in Yucatán, and heavy rain, between 50 and 75 mm, in the northern areas of Campeche and Quintana Roo. Wind gusts of 120 to 150 km/h, high waves of up to 5 meters on the Yucatán coast, and the potential formation of water spouts are also expected. In the northern regions of Campeche and Quintana Roo, wind gusts could reach 90 km/h, with waves of up to four meters.

Schools Reopen Following Hurricane Milton

The governments of Quintana Roo and Yucatán have reported no fatalities in their states due to the hurricane, despite its intensity. Yucatán's governor, Joaquín Díaz Mena, announced that school services would resume at all levels, with public transportation being gradually reinstated throughout the day. He also reported that the minor damages caused by the hurricane were being addressed immediately, thanks to the efforts of Civil Protection personnel, the State Public Security Secretariat, the National Defense Secretariat, the Navy Secretariat, and the National Guard.

Quintana Roo's governor, Mara Lezama, announced that restrictions imposed due to the hurricane were lifted as the cyclone moved away from the state's coast. She thanked federal forces, Civil Protection teams, and the public for their cooperation during the emergency. "All supermarkets, hospitals, and banks are now operating normally, and the ports and crossings to the islands will gradually reopen," she said. However, classes remain suspended in the municipalities of Benito Juárez, Lázaro Cárdenas, Puerto Morelos, Cozumel, and Isla Mujeres, with school services set to resume on Wednesday.
