Discover the Hottest Beach Getaways in Mexican Caribbean

As the winter holiday season approaches, travel to Cancún and the Mexican Caribbean is on the rise. The region's year-round warmth and stunning beaches make it a top choice for vacationers. Here's a look at the three most popular beach destinations in the Mexican Caribbean right now.

Travel Boom in Mexican Caribbean Coastal Towns

The Mexican Caribbean continues to be a major player in the travel industry, welcoming over 21 million visitors in 2023. With visitor numbers expected to rise in 2024, the region's beautiful white sand beaches and clear blue waters make it a top choice for international travel. The coastal towns and small cities along the Mexican Caribbean are preparing to welcome an influx of travelers this year.

Playa del Carmen Experiences Strongest Growth

Playa del Carmen is currently one of the most popular beach destinations in the Mexican Caribbean. According to the Secretariat of Tourism, the city saw an average occupancy rate of nearly 90% in the first half of the year. Located just south of Cancún, Playa del Carmen is known for its white sandy beaches, including the highly photogenic Playa Esmeralda.

Akumal Draws in Travelers with Eco-Tours

Another trending destination this fall is Akumal. Although smaller than Playa del Carmen or Cancún, this coastal town is famous for its eco-tours, particularly those involving sea turtles. Akumal also boasts some of the most luxurious resorts in the Mexican Caribbean, including the 5-star Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya.

Cancún Leads in Hotel Rooms and Attractions

Cancún remains one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in the Mexican Caribbean, with about 77% of all rooms sold out on average this year. While slightly lower than its southern counterparts, Cancún offers nearly 38,000 hotel rooms, making it the region's most diverse accommodation destination. The city also has over 11 popular public beaches, including Deflines, Marlin, and Langosta, all certified Blue Flag beaches. This fall, visitors can enjoy Cancún's relatively sargasso-free beaches, with minimal traces of sargasso seaweed.
