A recent video on social media has captured the attention of many as it shows inspectors from the Institute of Mobility of Quintana Roo (IMOVEQROO) detaining tourists at surprise checkpoints throughout the municipality.

The video, recorded by a local at a checkpoint on Cobá Avenue, shows the inspectors refusing to explain their actions when questioned about the detainment of tourists. This incident has sparked criticism from the local community, especially as it occurred during the low season when tourism is down and businesses are struggling to attract visitors. Many are questioning the priorities of the mobility authorities and suggesting potential corruption.

The detained tourists, a group from Chile, were held in the rain after renting ATVs. Despite having all necessary paperwork, including valid driving licenses, they were detained without clear reason. This incident has caused frustration and has negatively impacted their experience in Tulum. These checkpoints appear to specifically target tourists and tourist transport, leading to concerns among local business owners. They worry that such actions tarnish Tulum's reputation as a safe and welcoming destination. Meanwhile, other mobility issues, such as oversight of rental and transportation companies, seem to be overlooked by the authorities.

In light of these events, questions are being raised about whether IMOVEQROO's actions align with efforts to boost tourism and improve mobility in Tulum. The local community is calling for a review of supervision policies and practices to ensure that such operations do not deter tourists or harm the reputation of this key Mexican Caribbean tourist destination.
