New Eco-Friendly Structures Enhance Tourism and Reef Protection at Punta Nizuc

Seven additional structures will be installed underwater at Punta Nizuc tomorrow, following an investment of 400,000 pesos. These structures will form a module designed to manage the flow of tourists visiting the natural reefs. Simultaneously, they will aid in the conservation and rehabilitation of local corals and provide a habitat for new species.

Ricardo Muleiro, the director of Nauticos for Quintana Roo, announced the initiative alongside Arturo González, director of the National Park of the Western Coast of Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún and Punta Nizuc. Claudia Padilla, a promoter of the coral restoration project, as well as Enric Valencia and Jorge Garcia, specialists and director of Aquawold, also participated in the announcement.

The structures will be installed at Punta Nizuc, in a gallery located within the National Park that comprises the protected area in the northern part of the state. This marks the second time a new set of structures will be submerged to divert tourists towards natural reefs within protected areas.

The structures will also attract new colonies and species, further aiding in the rehabilitation of corals. These artificial habitats help with conservation efforts by directing tourist traffic towards these areas. It is estimated that around 500 pieces currently act as artificial reefs in this protected natural area, diverting at least 33,000 diving tanks per year, a development seen as beneficial.

The installation taking place tomorrow, along with the habitats, represents an investment of 400,000 pesos. This initiative is made possible through the participation and contribution of the private sector, civil society, and government, under the management and supervision of the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas.
