Cozumel Shines in Top Sustainable Tourism Honors

Cozumel, a picturesque island, has been featured in the 100 most inspiring sustainable tourism stories of 2024. This recognition was given by Green Destinations, an international nonprofit organization. The acknowledgment highlights the island's comprehensive sustainability practices, implemented by both the local community and the municipal government, under the leadership of José Luis Chacón Méndez.

The award-winning project, "Loving Cozumel, the Water Sentries," emphasizes the island residents' dedication to preserving their natural resources. A significant part of the project is dedicated to educating the community about the importance of water resource management.

The Mayor believes that these conservation efforts are crucial in encouraging a sense of environmental responsibility among the locals. He stated, "A more environmentally conscious society is vital for our island's well-being."

The 2024 edition of Green Destinations' inspiring stories includes entries from 32 countries, all of which focus on resilience and responsible tourism. Cozumel's inclusion is a testament to the municipality's ongoing commitment to sustainability and continuous improvement.

Green Destinations operates in over 80 countries and is dedicated to promoting sustainable tourism. They do this through evaluation programs and online reports. Their mission is to bring visibility to innovative initiatives that positively impact tourist destinations worldwide.
