Ricardo Zalazar, the director of the Mobility Institute of the State of Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo), recently discussed the potential changes and significance of a new metropolitan mobility project in Cancún, dubbed the "Cancún Maya Train Metropolitan Connection".
The project is a new metropolitan transport system that is currently in development in the city. Zalazar explained that it is designed to connect the tourist areas of 'Islas Mujeres' and Cancún with popular local areas and the 'Maya Train', creating an integrated public transport system.
The "Cancún Maya Train Metropolitan Connection" will consist of five corridors. The goal is to establish the first metropolitan system in the city, a development that stems from the city's population growth. Zalazar emphasized that this transport system will be unique due to the level of control and organization involved, particularly in relation to minibuses, concessions, and government tariffs. The plan is to implement a trust that will manage all electronic media tariffs, with the government compensating the operator based on the distance traveled.
Zalazar also noted that for a transport system to be profitable, significant investment in the state's infrastructure is required. He estimated that the transition to this new system could take between 40 and 50 years. He concluded by emphasizing the importance of community cooperation during this transition, particularly in respecting the locations of transportation stops.
