A group of individuals are reportedly planning to seize a plot of land known as "Las Torres" in Puerto Aventuras. The current mayor, Gilberto Gómez, is allegedly supporting this move as part of his reelection strategy. The plot, which spans approximately three hectares of jungle, has already been targeted for road development using heavy machinery.

This is not the first time such an attempt has been made. During Cristina Torres Gómez's tenure as mayor, there were attempts to illegally occupy this area, which is known to be in agrarian litigation. A large group of people tried to claim the land after clearing a significant portion of the jungle. This resulted in a large-scale police response, which successfully prevented the takeover.

Local residents have expressed concern that this situation could mirror previous land invasions in Playa del Carmen, which were associated with criminal activity. These fears have been heightened by the recent deforestation efforts to facilitate the invasion.

Mayor Gómez, who is currently lacking popular support, is suspected of using the land as a bargaining tool to secure votes in the upcoming mayoral election. The plot, now known as the Puerto Palma colony, is located behind the Puerto Aventuras sports unit.

The initial attempted invasion during Cristina Torres' government was thwarted by police intervention. However, there are indications that the plot is once again being targeted, allegedly under the leadership of an individual known as "La Vanesa".

It is worth noting that Puerto Aventuras has already experienced two previous land invasions. The first, Eben Ezer, was reportedly promoted by the Beristain family and includes properties owned by Mayor Gómez. The second invasion, Monte Sinaí, resulted in the establishment of a private school called San Patrick, which continues to operate despite the illegal occupation.
